HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp2000 IDS Base Model

Blank screen and/or or no display upon waking appears to be a systemic problem for HP 17 notebooks. I can detect power to the screen upon exiting sleep or hibernation mode as the screen becomes lighter. Unfortunately, nothing more - no display - nothing. The only means to display is to complete a hard boot then enter Windows within a one or two minutes. This issue also ocures when this notebook first starts if the windows start password is not entered in the first couple of minutes (5 minutes or less.) I have updated the BIOS as well as all HP software updates, All Microsoft updates, All 365 updates and All drivers, this notebook has no accessories or other. The HP online support agent was unable to identify the root cause; this notebook is still under warranty.  I would appreciate learning how others have resolved this issue. Thank you.

Hi @alanmatthew

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating and persistent issue with your HP 17 laptop. Here are some potential solutions and steps to consider:

Power Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then turn the laptop back on.

Display Function Key:

  • When waking from sleep, try pressing the Fn + F4 (or the appropriate function key for display switching) to see if it brings up the display.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and check your power plan settings. Make sure settings for sleep and hibernation are configured properly.

Graphics Driver Update:

Sleep Mode Settings:

  • Disable hibernation and adjust sleep mode settings to see if that alleviates the issue. You can do this in the Command Prompt by running the command powercfg -h off.

BIOS Settings:

System File Check:

  • Run a system file check to see if there are any corrupted files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
