If the power cord is plugged into the unit and the wall outlet, the computer is fine.  If I unplug it , the computer goes black and will not work.  The unit flashes amber red when plugged in.  The battery is not charging. All of the diagnostics say that the battery and cord are fine?

Now what?

Hi @Steffie6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP laptop is experiencing a problem where it only operates when plugged into a power outlet and the battery is not charging. The flashing amber light typically indicates an issue with the battery or power system.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Battery Health in BIOS:

  • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS setup by pressing F10 repeatedly as the computer boots.
  • Look for battery diagnostics in the BIOS menu and check the battery health.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord.
  • Remove the battery if it is removable.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any remaining power from the capacitors.
  • Reinsert the battery, plug in the power adapter, and try turning on the computer.

Check Power Adapter and Cable:

  • Ensure that the power adapter is providing the correct voltage and wattage.
  • Try using a different compatible power adapter or cord to rule out any issues with the current adapter.

Inspect the Battery:

  • If your battery is removable, check that it is properly seated and the contacts are clean and free of debris.
  • Try using a spare battery if available to check if the issue persists.

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Official HP® Support and check for any available BIOS or driver updates for your laptop model.
  • Ensure that you have the latest BIOS version and power management software installed.

HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Run the HP hardware diagnostics tool to check the battery's health. You can access this tool by pressing F2 during startup. This tool may help isolate the issue better.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I have tried everything you mentioned.  I bought a new cord and it still won’t work.  I get this blue box when the computer turns on.

Hi @Steffie6,

Thank you for your response.

It looks like a CMOS battery issue.

We request that you perform the CMOS reset. Kindly follow the steps and do let us know how it goes.

Reset the CMOS
Turn off the computer.
Press and hold the Windows + V keys, and then simultaneously press and hold the power button.
When the CMOS Reset screen displays or you hear beeping sounds, release the Windows + V keys.

Press Enter to restart the computer.

I hope this helps.
