Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 16-a0051wm that has been struggling to boot up, especially after going into Sleep mode.

When I try to hardboot the laptop out of sleep mode, I get 5 slow and 3 fast white Caps Lock LED flashes.

Using the flash guide, I believe that this indicates an issue with the BIOS, but when I try to follow the instructions to hold down Shift+Power or WIndows+B/V I cannot get the diagnostic screen to appear to reboot the BIOS. The instructions I keep finding appear to be Desktop specific, or I’ve misread the flash guide.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I finally do get my laptop up and running, it will occassionally crash at random, usually when I'm typing.

I previously misidentified the series of flashes and thought that I was experiencing an issue with the RAM, and so, I have previously opened the laptop, removed the battery, then disconnected and reconnected the RAM. This seemed to help with the issue for a few days, but the issue has slowly gone back to where I cannot turn my laptop on again.

The only other problem I can think of, is every time I do get the computer to hard boot back on, during the start process I get a pop up asking me to verify an untrusted driver certificate or some other program certificate. No matter if I ignore, approve, or choose a different option for the certificate, the pop up always comes back whenever I hard boot my laptop. I’ve tried googling around to see what this certificate is for, but it’s a string of random letters & numbers (that I unfortunately didn’t save anywhere off of my laptop) that are always the same. The other certificate options I see are all related to Adobe, so I was just assuming that it was an issue with one of my Adobe products unrelated to the booting issue, but I’m including the info here just in case I’m wrong about that.

EDIT: The Certificate is an expired and untrusted CA Root Certificate that I think is associated with my shipping label software, so probably not the cause of the issue.

Thank you for your help!

Jon

Hi @ZephronScythe,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding blinking lights on your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all external peripherals and unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to ensure the laptop’s internal components are reset.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and attempt to power on the laptop.

Attempt BIOS Recovery:

  • Windows Key + B or V Method: With the laptop powered off, press and hold the Windows key and the ‘B’ key (or ‘V’ key), then press the power button for 2-3 seconds and release it. Keep holding the Windows and ‘B’ or ‘V’ key until you hear beeping or see the BIOS recovery screen.
  • Shift + Power Method: If the above method doesn't work, try pressing and holding the Shift key while pressing the Power button to attempt recovery modes.

Inspect for Physical Issues:

  • Check if the laptop's battery or power supply is functioning properly. If possible, test with another compatible power adapter or battery.

Update BIOS using a USB Drive:

  • Download the latest BIOS update for your model from the HP support website using another device.
  • Follow online instructions for creating a BIOS update USB drive, and attempt to boot the laptop using this drive to update the BIOS.

Check HP Support for Specific Error Code Information:

  • Visit HP’s support website which may offer specific documentation for your error code and provide additional troubleshooting tips.

I hope this helps.
