HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 (D8X43UA#ABA, 15-b142dx)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 on the HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 (D8X43UA#ABA, 15-b142dx) the computer failed to detect the battery and the boot times became unacceptable.  (I was upgrading the operating system for a friend because they were having trouble understanding windows 8, they are now totally pissed.)

When booting the computer with the battery plugged in, the boot time takes over 2 minutes just to get to windows.  When the battery is unplugged, the boot times are normal.  The F2 bios diagnostics lingers for over half an hour, I ended up just shutting down the computer.

After the slow boot up times and battery detection issue started, I updated the computer's bios version from what appeared to be F.1B to F1.E Rev.A.  This did not solve any issue or seem to affect the computer in any way.

Is there any way to fix this problem without removing the battery, which is the only solution that works at the moment?

Yes, that would have been good information to have eariler. I have seen some laptops refuse to boot at all with a bad battery installed. Not sure why it didn't affect boot time until you upgraded it but at least you know the solution now. The laptop can be run without the battery if the owner doesn't want to replace it.

I would suggest trying a power reset:

I've done 2 or 3 resets.  The computer boots up faster immediately after them, but unfortunately they don't fix the problems.

My friend told me the battery was dead (after not mentioning it earlier) and I unplugged the battery to see if that fixed the problem.

After removing the dead battery, the boot times returned to normal and the issue was gone.  Probably an issue of some sort with a dead battery.

Just had a thought- you might check his battery on the recall program at HP.
