Hi folks,

I've got a brand new company owned "HP EliteBook 840 G7" notebook working fine with my KVM switch at home.

To power on the notebook its lid needs to be opened and it would be very helpful, if this action could be accomplished kind of "remote" also.

So I'd  like to know, if it's  possible to power on this notebook after a complete shutdown, and keeping closed, solely by external keyboard?

Unfortunately I cannot verify this myself because the notebook's BIOS is password protected (and according to the company's IT guy there's just no such PowerOn-on-Keyboard feature).

Best,
Sloner

Hello banhien,

Many thanks for your quick response.

I was able to get a HP dock ("HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2") and in fact it works the way you described:

Using the dock's on-off switch it is possible to boot up a shut down notebook, as well as properly shut down a running system. It also works the other way round, ie. shutting down the notebook will shut down the dock also, resp. opening the notebook's lid will power up the notebook and the dock.

So using such a dock indeed is a - although costly - way for powering on and off  this notebook without touching it.

Best regards,
Sloner

No, there is no such feature for external keyboards. Some docking stations allow you to use single cable and the result:  When close the lid, power on the dock, it also power on machine at the same time. Shutdown machine, it also shuts down the dock.

Regards.
