HP Laptop PC 15-dy2000 (2D115AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Laptop PC 15-dy2000 has been stuck on Preparing Automatic Repair loop.  When it finally gets done running, it shows the following error:

You device ran into a problem and needs to restart.  We'll restart for you.  Stop code: DRIVER PNP_WATCHDOG

It will restart and loop the same message over and over.  I have been able to get into the start up menu by pressing esc while turning on, and have run all the system diagnostics which have passed.

F11 System Recovery does nothing but return me to the endless Preparing Automatic Repair Loop.

Have been unsuccessful in getting laptop to boot in safe mode or WinRE.

This Laptop is only 2 year old, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @hmbrown,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed description. The DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG error during the "Preparing Automatic Repair" loop on your HP Laptop PC 15-dy2000 running Windows 11 typically points to a driver or boot-related issue. Since you've already tried diagnostics and F11 recovery without success, here are the next steps you can try:

1. Hard Reset the Laptop

Sometimes, a hard reset can clear temporary issues:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect all external devices.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try booting again.

2. Access Advanced Startup Options via Bootable USB

Since Safe Mode and WinRE aren't accessible, create a Windows 11 installation media on another PC:

  • Download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
  • Create a bootable USB drive (at least 8GB).
  • Boot your HP laptop from the USB (press ESC > F9 for Boot Menu).
  • Select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options.

From there, try:

  • Startup Repair
  • System Restore (if restore points exist)

3. Still have trouble, try the Extensive Test -

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

4. Click Extensive Test

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

HI, thank you for the information however I am still unable to boot my laptop correctly.

Step 1:  The hard reset didn't work

Step 2:  Start up repair:  Start up repair couldn't repair your PC, I hit advanced options, go to system restore and I get "To use System Restore, you  must specify which Windows installation to restore.  Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select system Restore."  Can't restart laptop

Step 3:  System Extensive Test all passed

Tried F11, it just goes back to the Preparing Automatic Repair Loop

Hi @hmbrown,

Thank you for letting me know, in this case, the only option available is to perform a clean install of the OS using a 32 GB USB, downloading an OEM copy from another Windows 10 or higher Pc.

Sharing the link that will help you and guide you on cloud recovery. Please try and keep us posted on how it goes

I hope this helps.
