Black screen after Ram install troubleshooting

 

Laptop 

 

Model HP 15eh1070wm

 

Amd ryzen 7 5700u

 

Amd Radeon Graphics

 

8gb DDR4 3200- 2x4gb cards baseline

 

Motherboard: HP 88D0 PCI-Express 3.0

 

Bios: AMI F.34

 

Firmware fully updated

 

I installed 1x16gb ddr4 3200 2Rx8 sodimm #CT16G4SFRA32A ordered directly from Crucial via Compatibility Matching to upgrade my laptop and it wont boot past black screen ive tried every configuration of 4gb+16gb and 16gb solo and waited up to 10 minutes for memory training and nothing. No caps light blinking indicating post error. I've tried a hard reset, ive tried removing the main battery and draining power from the motherboard by holding power for 60 seconds. Ive tried the win+ctrl+shift+b on startup, tried win+v cmos 3x, tried win+b on boot 3x. Ive made sure max memory wasn't selected in msconfig advanced settings.

 

It boots fine with og cards reinstalled. Is there some niche troubleshooting im missing or am I looking at a DOA RAM card?

Hi,

Since the laptop boots normally again with the original 2 × 4 GB modules, the notebook itself is probably OK.

At this point I would focus on the new Crucial module or compatibility, not Windows. RAM detection happens before Windows loads, so settings like msconfig will not affect a black screen/no POST situation.

A few points:

  1. The fact that the laptop does not boot with the 16 GB module installed by itself is the most important test.
    If one known-good original module boots in the same slot, but the 16 GB module does not boot in either slot, the 16 GB module is either incompatible with this system or defective.
  2. Check the HP Maintenance and Service Guide for the exact HP 15-eh1000 series.
    Some HP 15-eh1000 configurations are officially listed with support up to 16 GB total, usually 2 × 8 GB DDR4-3200, not necessarily 1 × 16 GB or 20/24 GB mixed configurations.

  1. I would avoid mixing 4 GB + 16 GB while troubleshooting. Test only:
    • original 4 GB module alone in slot 1
    • original 4 GB module alone in slot 2
    • new 16 GB module alone in slot 1
    • new 16 GB module alone in slot 2
  2. If both slots boot with the original RAM but neither slot boots with the new 16 GB module, return/exchange the Crucial module.
  3. For best compatibility, use a matched kit such as 2 × 8 GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM, 1.2 V, non-ECC, unbuffered, rather than mixing different capacities.
  4. After installing compatible RAM, the first boot may take longer than normal, but 10 minutes with no POST and no display is not normal.

So my conclusion would be: you are probably not missing a special BIOS or Windows setting. Either the 16 GB module is not compatible with this notebook, or it is DOA. Since the original RAM works immediately, I would exchange it and, ideally, use a matched 2 × 8 GB kit that matches the HP service guide specification.

The practical move is to start a return/RMA and try a different brand same specs 16 GB module rather than keep chasing firmware resets. This ram should be compatible but not working indicate bad module or similar issue.

Yes, I agree. Since the original RAM works in the laptop and the new 16 GB module does not boot even when installed alone, the practical next step is to return/RMA that module rather than keep repeating BIOS or Windows troubleshooting.

The module may be listed as compatible, but a no-POST black screen with that module only still points to either a defective module or a specific compatibility issue with that stick.

Trying another 16 GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM of the same basic specification, or using a matched 2 × 8 GB kit as listed in the HP service guide, would be the safer next test.
