System info:

Windows: 10

Today I opened my laptop and it displays black screen with message stating "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I tried pressing ctrl+alt+del and it's start working but after 5 minutes it goes back to same screen stating "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

Can you please provide solution to this. Thanks!

Hi @rakeshkr8888

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details. I can understand how concerning it is to see your system intermittently showing the “Reboot and Select proper Boot device” message and then briefly starting before returning to the same screen.

To guide you in the most accurate way, I’d like to understand a few things about the current condition of the laptop:

  • When the system does start (after Ctrl + Alt + Del), does Windows load normally to the desktop, or does it behave slowly or show any error messages?
  • Have you recently made any changes such as Windows updates, BIOS updates, or hardware changes?
  • Do you notice any unusual sounds from the laptop (for example, clicking noise from the hard drive)?
  • Are you able to access the Startup Menu by repeatedly pressing the Esc key immediately after powering on the laptop?

This message usually indicates that the system is intermittently not detecting the internal storage drive or the boot sequence is not being consistently recognized. Since it comes and goes, it could be related to either boot configuration or the drive connection/state.

Once you confirm the above, I will guide you with precise steps such as checking the boot order, running hardware diagnostics, and validating the drive health.

I’ll stay with you on this and help you move forward step by step once I have your observations.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Regards,
