My son's laptop won't boot up.  Received error message "The selected boot device failed"  Downloaded a recovery Bios file to flash drive and reloaded and restarted the computer and the same error came up?  Any suggestions.  Systems check says Hardrive and all hardware passed.  Thank you!

@EricC1,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post that you are having issues with the computer not booting into Windows anymore. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824  (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Have you recently made any changes on the PC before the issue started?

Was there any update which was interrupted?

Have you created a set of recovery media for your PC?

Did you know the Bit-locker is a part security encryption, did you make any changes to your security software before this issue occurred?

Have you performed a hard reset?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

The BIOS can be configured to specify the order in which the computer will access available bootable hardware devices. The most common bootable devices are the internal hard drive, external USB drive, optical CD/DVD ROM drive, and network adapter. If a device fails during the process of checking each device for the required bootable files, the computer verifies that another device is available.

If the computer BIOS checks all the listed devices but does not find the bootable files, an error message like one of the following is displayed: 3F0 error or Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

If these boot device errors persist, perform the following steps in the order listed.

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

A hard or forced reset erases all information in the computer memory and might restore functionality. Resetting your computer forces the system to clear and reestablish the software connections between the BIOS and the hardware.

If you have run the extensive test on the hard drive and if the test passes, the next option would be to perform a system recovery using the partition available on your PC.

If for some reason you are not able to inititiate, then I would suggest you to follow this link to learn about ordering a set of recovery media for your PC.

Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l
