HP Laptop PC 15s-fq2000 (2D118AV)

Hello HP Team,

I’m facing a recurring issue with my HP Laptop 15s. The laptop remains completely black and unresponsive when I press the power button, even though the power light turns on and the charger is connected. However, after observing this for a few days, I noticed a clear pattern — the system only turns on once the battery is fully charged (100%).

Here are the details and what I’ve already tried:

  • Ran all hardware diagnostics (memory, processor, extensive tests) — no issues detected.

  • Performed hard reset and power drain procedure — no change.

  • Tried different charging times and environments — same result.

  • Laptop was fully charged before shutdown, yet refuses to boot until it recharges again.

  • When it does power on, it works perfectly without any lag or crashes.

This makes me suspect a BIOS or Embedded Controller (EC)–related power detection issue, since it seems the system won’t boot until it receives a “fully charged” signal.

Could you please help me verify if this is a known BIOS issue or provide guidance on:

  1. Whether I should perform a BIOS or EC update/reset, and if so, the correct and safe version for my model.

  2. Any known power circuit or firmware issue in the HP Laptop 15s series related to this symptom.

Here are my details (you can adjust this part):

  • Model: HP Laptop pc15s-fq2000

  • OS: Windows 11

  • BIOS Version(F.39)

@Debar5, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Perform an EC and Residual Power Reset

Disconnect the charger and any peripherals.

Hold the power button for 25 seconds to discharge any residual charge from the system board.

Reconnect the AC adapter only (no battery if removable) and attempt to power on.

If it powers up, shut it down again, reconnect the battery, and test once more.
This procedure helps reset the Embedded Controller (EC), which manages battery-charging logic and startup power sequencing.

Update the BIOS Using HP Image

Ensure the laptop is connected to AC power and the battery is above 30%.

Go to HP Support Assistant → My Devices → Updates or visit the HP website, enter your product number (15s-fq2000 / 2D118AV) and download the latest BIOS (currently F.40 Rev.A).

During installation, do not interrupt power; allow the system to reboot and complete the EC firmware refresh that accompanies BIOS updates.

After update completion, perform one normal startup and one cold boot to confirm improvement.

Check Battery Calibration and Status

Boot into BIOS by tapping F10 during startup.

Under Diagnostics → Battery Test, run a full battery check.

If the result shows “Calibration Required” or “Weak Battery”, choose to run the calibration.

A miscalibrated battery can send incorrect “charge full” or “charge low” signals, confusing the EC and preventing normal boot until 100%.

Run Component Tests from HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

Power on and repeatedly press Esc → F2.

Run both Power and Battery component tests.

This ensures there are no voltage irregularities being flagged internally that could delay startup.

Restore Power Settings in BIOS

Enter BIOS → Exit → Load Setup Defaults → Exit Saving Changes.

This clears any stored firmware-level power state data.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
