Hi @Lavender25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how unsettling it is to see a black screen with just the mouse pointer, especially after your HP laptop said it was installing updates and then got stuck. Let’s walk through a few steps to gently bring your system back to life.

Fix: HP Laptop Stuck on Black Screen with Cursor After Update

Step 1: Try a Safe Mode Boot

This helps bypass any corrupted update or driver.

  1. Force shutdown your laptop by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press F11 repeatedly to enter Recovery Mode.
  3. If successful, go to:
    • Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
    • Then press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode:

  • Uninstall any recent updates via Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  • Restart normally.

Step 2: Use Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Sometimes the system is running, but the display is stuck.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • If it opens, go to File > Run new task, type explorer.exe, and hit Enter.
  • This may restore your desktop.

Step 3: Perform System Restore

If you had restore points enabled:

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode (F11).
  2. Go to Advanced Options > System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point before the update.

Step 4: Reset Windows (Last Resort)

If nothing works, you can reset Windows without losing files:

  1. Boot into Recovery Mode (F11).
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
