My system comes up to the signon on screen. Once I put in my password I get this message
This sign-in option is disabled because of failed sign-in attempts or repeated shutdowns. Use a different sign-in option or keep your deviced powered on for at least 2 hours and then try again.
Did this but it still doesn't work.

Hi @rmsams
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for explaining that—this error is especially frustrating when you’ve already waited the recommended two hours and still can’t sign in. It’s part of Windows’ security lockout mechanism, but there are several ways to bypass or fix it. Here’s a complete recovery guide tailored to your HP ENVY x360 running Windows 11:
✅ 1. Use a Different Sign-In Option
- At the login screen, click Sign-in options.
- Choose password, PIN, fingerprint, or picture password if available.
🔐 2. Check Your Microsoft Account
- If using a Microsoft account, visit the password recovery page.
- Reset your password and try signing in with the new credentials.
⏳ 3. Follow the Wait Period Precisely
- Leave your laptop powered on and plugged in for at least 2 full hours without attempting to sign in.
- Windows uses this idle time to clear lockouts—make sure the screen doesn’t go to sleep or turn off completely.
🔄 4. Restart the System After Waiting
- Once the 2-hour period ends, restart the laptop.
- Try signing in again using your preferred method.
🔑 5. Use a Password Reset Disk
- If you previously created one:
- Insert the disk or USB.
- Click “Reset password” on the login screen.
- Follow the on-screen wizard.
If not, consider making one once access is restored—it’s a handy backup tool.
🧰 6. Access an Alternate Administrator Account
- If you have another account with admin rights, sign into it.
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users and reset your locked account’s password or PIN.
🧪 7. Boot into Safe Mode
To bypass lockout and fix account settings:
- Hold Shift and click Restart from the login screen.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Once booted, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and reset your login method.
🧼 8. Reset the PC (Last Resort)
If all else fails:
- On the login screen, hold Shift and click Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files (or Remove everything).
- Follow prompts to reinstall Windows.
Let me know which login method you were using (PIN, password, fingerprint), and I’ll help tailor the next steps. You’ve already shown determination—now let’s get that laptop unlocked! 💪🔓
