HP Pavilion 16 inch Laptop PC 16-ag0000 (955U3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Just got a HP Laptop and since day 2 ive sometimes had issues starting it. Black screen with errorcode 0xc0000185 and the computer turns off.
WHat ive tried so far is replacing ssd, reinstall WIndows 11 (within windows), managed to get a repair screen once , and lastly I did a total new install of WIndows. Still getting the same error.
Usually the laptop will start up without issues the next try.

Could it be a bios issue?

@Kngl19, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The error code 0xc0000185 typically indicates a problem with the boot configuration data (BCD) or a hardware communication issue, often related to the SSD or motherboard.

You've already done a great job trying several steps like replacing the SSD and reinstalling Windows. Since the issue persists intermittently, here are some targeted steps to help resolve it:

Check BIOS Version and Update if Needed

A buggy or outdated BIOS can cause intermittent boot issues. Here's how to check and update:

  • Press Esc during startup → Select F1 for System Information → Note the BIOS version.
  • Visit the HP Support page and compare your version.
  • If outdated, download the latest BIOS and follow this HP guide to update BIOS safely.

⚠️ Ensure the laptop is plugged in and do not interrupt the update process.

Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

This will check for SSD, RAM, and motherboard issues.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press Esc repeatedly during startup → Press F2 for Diagnostics.
  • Run System Tests > Extensive Test (takes ~2 hours).

Rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD)

If the error appears again, try rebuilding BCD using a Windows Recovery USB:

  • Create a Windows 11 USB using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool.
  • Boot from USB → Select Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Command Prompt.
  • Run these commands:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /scanos

bootrec /rebuildbcd

Check SSD Connection and NVMe Compatibility

Since you've replaced the SSD, ensure:

  • It's seated properly.
  • It's compatible with the laptop’s NVMe slot (some models are picky with Gen4 drives).
  • Try disabling Fast Boot in BIOS to reduce startup stress on SSD.

Reset BIOS to Defaults

Sometimes custom settings cause instability.

  • Enter BIOS (press Esc → F10).
  • Go to Exit tab → Select Load Setup Defaults → Save and Exit.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
