HP Spectre x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-eu0000 (7K633AV)

Description

Look at the steps to reproduce section below. If those steps are followed, my screen immediately turns off and enters sleep mode. Now i have to wake it up by providing my password/fingerprint. It is as if the system enters into a soft crash. However, whatever windows that were open remain.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Ensure that backlight timeout is set to 30 seconds in the BIOS
  2. Boot into Windows
  3. Turn on the backlight
  4. Wait till backlight turns off
  5. Press the backlight button

Observed result

The laptop screen turns off and enters sleep

Expected result

None of the above and for the keyboard backlight to just turn on

Do yall also experience this by following the steps i have provided too?

Hi @nethshan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds incredibly inconvenient to have your screen enter sleep mode instead of simply turning on the keyboard backlight as expected. This definitely isn’t the intended behavior, and it’s understandable why you'd want to know if others have encountered it.

To address this, try the following steps to see if it help prevent the sleep mode from being triggered when adjusting the keyboard backlight:

Update BIOS and Firmware:

  • Go to HP's support page for your model and check if there are updates for your BIOS or firmware, as these updates often resolve power management and sleep mode issues.

Adjust Windows Power Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  • Ensure that Sleep is set to a longer duration than the backlight timeout in the BIOS (e.g., at least 1 minute).
  • Also, try setting Screen timeout to a longer duration to see if it reduces the likelihood of the screen turning off unexpectedly.

Toggle Keyboard Backlight Settings in BIOS:

  • Enter the BIOS again and look for any additional settings under Keyboard Backlight that might be affecting power management.
  • If there’s an option to set the backlight to respond only to specific user actions, try enabling it to avoid unintentional sleep mode activation.

Run Windows Power Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Run the Power troubleshooter to see if it detects and resolves any power configuration conflicts that might be causing this behavior.

This should help stabilize the system’s response to the backlight button. Let me know how these steps work, or if you need further assistance.
