Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ap0xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This Spectre is less than 2 weeks old. From the beginning I found i couldn't power it up on occassion. Nothing worked including the power button, mouse movement etc. Plugging or unplugging the power cord has no affect. The only way I have found to power it up is by holding the power button for 10 seconds or so. I can then press the power button and the computer boots up in a clean state.

Hello @jonga05

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Community.

What you experience happens because the PC was never shut down properly. It did not complete the shutdown properly and has stuck. You need to hard reboot it (pressing the holding the power-on button) and there it complete the shutdown. You can then start it properly.  This may happen due to some driver or 3rd party app not compatible.

  • With Windows 9x, XP, Vista, 7 - when you shutdown your PC it completely powers down and stops the operating system.

  • With Windows 8 (and now with Windows 10), Microsoft introduced something called Fast start-up which resembles the hibernation and is somewhat semi-shutdown. It is turned on by default in Windows 8,8.1 and Windows 10 and is a setting that helps your PC load faster after you choose the option called "shutdown". It's a trick (compared to Windows 7 and before). You can read more about it here:

and

Since you have issues with this, it means some application or driver you have on your PC fails to stop and fails to go into "hibernation" mode. Generally speaking and also in your case, best would be to DISABLE and STOP this option "Fast start up". It's just a matter of a couple of clicks in Control Panel -> Power Options

Please, read the articles and do it.  After you do it, save the changes, RESTART your computer and let's see if any difference.
