My laptop is configured to start only when I open its lid. Since I have a large screen connected to the laptop, I don't need to use its in-built screen, and I would prefer to find another way to start the laptop, e.g. by clicking or moving the mouse. There's nothing Settings that allows me to configure this. Is there another way?

Hi @JOHNAUS,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about understanding on how to startup the laptop, when you’re relying on a larger external display. Don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model of your HP laptop.
  • If the laptop is connected to power when you’re trying to start it.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try in the meantime:

  • Check BIOS/UEFI settings: Some HP laptops allow you to enable Wake on USB or Wake on Keyboard/Mouse in the BIOS. Restart your laptop, press esc or F10 during startup to enter BIOS, and look under Advanced or Power Management settings.
  • Enable Wake on LAN/USB in Device Manager: In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards or Mice and other pointing devices, right-click your device → Properties → Power Management tab, and check if “Allow this device to wake the computer” is available.
  • External keyboard power button: Some HP docking stations or external keyboards have a dedicated power button that can start the laptop without opening the lid. If you’re using one, this could be a convenient option.
  • Fast Startup settings: In Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do, make sure Fast Startup is enabled. This sometimes improves wake behavior.

I hope this helps.

Hi Deep-World. Thanks for your quick response.

For some reason, I'm unable to enter the BIOS. I've tried restarting a few times, pressing F10 when I see the HP logo appear, but that hasn't worked. Do I have to press it earlier?

I checked the Mouse properties in Device Manager, and the property 'Allow this device to wake the computer' is enabled. It must be the BIOS that needs to be changed.

You asked about the model number: 15-fd1010TU, and its Product ID is: 00342-21319-38477-AAOEM.

Hi @JOHNAUS,

Thanks for your response and thank you for sharing those details with me, I understand how  it can be when the BIOS just won’t open despite repeated attempts.

Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Press the key earlier: As soon as you power on the laptop, start tapping F10 repeatedly (not just once). Sometimes pressing too late means Windows begins loading instead.
  • Try alternate keys: On HP laptops, the BIOS key is usually F10, but occasionally Esc or F2 can bring up the startup menu first, from which you can select BIOS Setup.
  • Perform a full shutdown: Instead of restarting, shut down completely. Then press and hold the power button, and immediately begin tapping the BIOS key.
  • Disable Fast Startup (Windows setting): Fast Startup can sometimes skip the BIOS entry window. You can disable it temporarily in Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Turn off Fast Startup.
  • Clear external devices: Disconnect USB devices (mouse, keyboard, etc.) before booting, just to rule out interference.
  • Use HP Startup Menu: Press Esc right after powering on. This should bring up the Startup Menu, where you can then press F10 for BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Hi Deep_World,

I was able to open the BIOS by pressing the ESC key. However, I couldn't see an option that allows me to use the mouse to boot up. Click on this link to see my BIOS screen. It looks like I can't change it to what I wanted. Do you agree?
