My laptop Omen 16-am000 showed a strange behavior last night. It just became dead, no charger light, no laptop light.

I long pressed power button, changed the charger, but nothing happened. It was totally dead.

This morning, I pressed the power button, power button lights on, I saw a Chinese language screen, there was a link to hp website, and the link was like CMOS-bios error, then the laptop booted up and I saw my desktop. Now, it's running fine, but I'm scared if this happens again.

Please guide me why a laptop can become full dead and restore again. Many thanks

Hi @petroengfas,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

That sudden “dead” behavior followed by a CMOS-BIOS error screen is unsettling, and I completely understand your concern. Let’s break down what likely happened and how you can prevent it from recurring.

1. Update BIOS and Firmware

Make sure your BIOS is the latest version: 👉 OMEN 16 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-am0000 Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

Use HP Support Assistant or manually download from HP’s site.

2. Check Battery Health

Run HP Diagnostics:

  • Restart and press F2 repeatedly → Select Battery Test.
  • If the CMOS battery is weak, it may need replacement (done by the service center).

3. Avoid Sudden Shutdowns

Since you use this for gaming and work:

  • Ensure proper cooling.
  • Avoid unplugging during high load.
  • Use a surge protector or UPS if possible.

4. Run Full Hardware Diagnostics

Use HP UEFI Diagnostics:

  • Restart and press F2 → Run System Test and Component Tests.

 5. Reset BIOS Settings (Optional)

If the issue recurs:

  • Enter BIOS (Esc or F10 on startup).
  • Choose Load Setup Defaults → Save and Exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
