Earlier today, my system gave me a message to restart my computer to perform an update. 

I did the "Update and Restart".

When it was complete, my laptop had shut off instead of restarting.

I turned it back on with the power button.  It appeared as if it was going to start normally.  Got the screen with the HP logo and then on the bottom of the screen it said "attempting to recover installation" then "restoring to previous version" .

It runs through that twice and then shuts off.

I understand you are having issues with you laptop shuts down randomly, don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

 

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Does the laptop shuts down due to overheating?

Have you checked if the laptop shuts down in Bios?

 

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

 

In the meantime, let's start off by performing a Hard reset on the Notebook:

Step 1: Performing a hard reset: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

 

Step 2: ​​​​Boot the computer into the Bios screen and check if it shuts down.

 

1. Turn off your computer
2. Make sure you have connected the power cable
3. Turn on your notebook, as it is starting press the  F10 button repeatedly

Once you are in the BIOS, leave the  computer in the Bios screen for a while and check if it stays ON or does it shuts down. If the laptop shuts down even in the Bios it is likely a hardware failure.

If the laptop stays on in the Bios, I would suggest you try these steps here:

 

Run a system diagnostics as well as an extensive test on the Hard drive from F2(Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

If the test fails, I would suggest this could be a possible hardware failure. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for available service related options.

If the test passes, I would suggest you could perform a push button reset on the notebook, Windows 10 has a push-button reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This can be done either while preserving your personal data and customization, or removing all your personal data.

 

If the issue still persists, I would suggest here is to perform a system recovery.

Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. If your product is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
