Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After downloading the free Winows 10, I reverted back to Windows 7 Home Premium I then this week loaded up Win 10 again from the Windows Media Tool.

All functions in Windows 10 are working OK however it now takes over 5 minutes to boot up. First the Winows Logo appears, then it hangs on a black screen (no cursor or scrolling ring) for about 4 minutes until the Welcome screen finally boots up.

I have tried just about every fix shown on various forums (run scandisk, checked drivers, done HP diagnostics, etc. etc.) and yet the boot problem still remains.

I hope somebody knows of a simple fix for this most irritating problem as I don't want to have to go back to Windows 7 where the boot time is still good.

Hello, @pnaylor – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for joining HP Support Forums. I’d glad to be of your assistance!

I understand that you are having trouble booting the HP notebook as it always takes about 5 minutes to boot. I would suggest you first try and use HP Support Assistant to completely update the Windows 10 drivers.

HP Support Assistant is a software program designed to help you keep your computer in working order, prevent potential problems from arising, and resolve problems quickly and easily. The program also provides valuable system information that you need when troubleshooting computer problems. Please go to http://hp.care/2gFA6Q8 to install the HP SA if you do not have it already.

Also, if you have the HP SA installed then go to http://hp.care/2gqoIri and follow the steps under “Checking for HP updates’ to find and install the updates.

If the issue still persists, try to enable the fast startup as suggested below:

  1. First, open up your power options by hitting Windows+X or right-clicking your Start menu and selecting Power Options. In the Power Options window, click “Choose what the power buttons do.”
  2. If this is the first time you’ve tried changing these settings, you’ll need click “Change settings that are currently unavailable” to make the Fast Startup option available for configuration.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the window and you should see “Turn on fast startup (recommended),” along with other shutdown settings. Just use the check box to enable Fast Startup. Save your changes and shut down your system to test it out.

  4. If you don’t see the option at all, it means hibernation is not enabled on your machine. In this case, the only shutdown options you’ll see are Sleep and Lock. The quickest way to enable hibernation is to close the power settings window and then hit Windows+X and open Command Prompt (Admin). At the Command Prompt, type the command: powercfg /hibernate on
  5. After turning hibernate on, run through the steps again and you should see both the Hibernate and Fast Startup options.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

Thank you for your response, unfortunately I have tried all of the fixes you menioned and the problem still persists. In addition I found I was having problems with my map applications (Basecamp & Mapsource) that worked fine in Windows 7 but would not work in 10.

I have now had to revert to Windows 7 wich is a pity as I enjoyed using Windows 10. I will wait a few months and then try loading Win 10 to see if the latest updates may have addressed this problem.

Hello, @pnaylor

Thanks for the update!

I understand that you are planning to revert back to Windows 7. If interested you can try a clean install of Windows 10 from the Microsoft website instead of updating from the Windows 7 to Windows 10. Update the BIOS, chipset and other drivers.

Visit us again if you have any concerns!

Thank you again and may you also have a great day and even better tomorrow 🙂
