Hello, I am struggling to boot my laptop: HP 15-bs113dx, following a bios update.
The laptop shows a black screen when trying to boot. I suspected this was a bios issue so I tried to restore the bios trying every keybind I could find (wind.+b/v, esc, F10, F2, shift) but this did not open the bios. I then made a recovery USB using the model and SN of my laptop. Again I tried every keybind and hold of the power button to no avail.
Next, I tried with and without the battery attached. When the battery is attached the power light cycles between red and white. Without the battery, the light is just white.
I noticed these users have a similar issue: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/BIOS-Update-for-HP-15-bs-1xx-Failed-and-Brick...
Any advice?

Hi @Bumper412,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP 15 laptop is experiencing a BIOS failure, which can be tricky to recover from. Here’s a structured approach to troubleshoot and recover the BIOS.
Perform a Power Reset
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter without the battery and try turning the laptop on.
Use the BIOS Recovery Feature
HP laptops often have a built-in BIOS recovery system:
- Create a BIOS Recovery USB:
- Download the BIOS recovery software for your laptop from the HP support site.
- Use a working computer to create the recovery USB drive as you already did.
- Initiate Recovery:
- Insert the USB drive into the laptop.
- Hold the Windows key + B (or V) simultaneously, then press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds before releasing.
- If successful, the screen should light up, and the BIOS recovery process should begin.
If this doesn’t work, retry the process while holding Esc, F10, or F2 instead of Windows+B.
Inspect the LED Indicators
The LED light patterns provide clues:
- White light: Indicates power is reaching the system but doesn’t confirm BIOS functionality.
- Red/White blinking: Can indicate a hardware failure or a corrupt BIOS.
Refer to the HP website or your manual for the specific blink codes. Typically, 2-3 blinks might signal a BIOS issue.
Clear CMOS (if applicable)
If your laptop has a removable CMOS battery (a small coin-cell battery on the motherboard):
- Disconnect the main battery and AC adapter.
- Locate and remove the CMOS battery for about 5 minutes.
- Reinsert the CMOS battery, reconnect power, and try booting.

Attempt USB BIOS Recovery Without Display
Sometimes, the screen might stay off, but the BIOS recovery could still proceed:
- Insert the recovery USB.
- Power on the laptop and wait for about 10 minutes. Look for activity on the USB (flashing light) or changes in the power LED.
- If the recovery completes, the laptop should reboot automatically.
Note:
- Use only the specific BIOS file for your laptop model and Serial Number.
- If you suspect a hardware issue, inspect the RAM and storage drive connections by reseating them
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
