Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have an old HP Pavillion ZV5000 with an intel 32 bit processor that had an old mechanical 40 gb hard drive with windows 7 that failed by locking up.  I removed that drive and installed a used but operational 40 gb hard drive and tried to install windows 10 32 bit OS using disk creation with a bootable CD drive and also with a bootable USB drive.  Both methods failed identically.  They both recognized the bootable drives and started to install but immediately after starting stopped install and went back to a blank screen with flashing underline symbol in top left corner.   Bios shows that the drive installed on system and passes long and short drive tests.

Took that dive and replaced it with a similar one to same outcome.  Also took that drive and installed it with the windows 32 bit operating sysytem by usb bootable drive on my desktop and then swapped that drive into the HP Pavillion and it still fails to boot.

I had an old early windows 7 32 bit bootable CD so for laughs tried to install it and it loaded flawlessly but I can't update or use it as microsoft updates for this system are not available.  That copy of windows 7  has internet explorer and I can't connect to the internet with that.  I really need to install a 32 bit windows 10 but don't understand why even a 32 bit copy from a different computer fails to boot.  Does anyone understand what the issue is with windows 10 on this laptop?  Thanks.

Thanks so much Paul.  That makes sense.  I thought I had winows 10 installed before the drive failed but I had not used it for a while and the drive failed on first boot.  I had an old XP drive for this laptop but as stated it locked up on boot and I had no other options but to do a new install.

How do I identify my version of this HP ZV5000?  I've tried to use the laptop codes and the web to confirm the motherboard and processor without tearing it apart, but no success.  The bios reports a Pavilion zv5000 (PC742AV) with system board 089C running an intel celeron 2.80 ghz CPU and I have 2 gb of Ram installed.  I am not sure if the processor could be upgraded on this motherboard to allow  a win 10 upgrade.   Where can I locate the info to identify this laptop version without a complete tear down..  Thanks.

You're very welcome, Don:

Here is the link to the parts list which shows the list of processors that were offered in the model series:

HP PartSurfer

It is very unlikely that any of those processors will support W8 or newer.

I had an old HP d530 desktop PC that I was able to install W7 32 bit on and it worked fine.

While it was a desktop PC it used the same Pentium Northwood processor family.

When Windows 8 came out, it would not install on my PC.

Below is the link to the zv5000 service manual.

Maintenance and Service Guide

The oldest notebook PC that I installed W10 on was a HP nc6400 with a Mobile Intel 945GM chipset and a Pentium T2400 processor.

I don't believe that you can go older than that.

For one thing there are no W10 graphics drivers for any older Intel GPU.

Based on the parts surfer it appears the processor is part 364849-001 intel P4 Celeron Processor 2.80gHz (northwood, 400mHz front side bus, 256 KB level 2cache, PPGAFC-PGA2 478 pin 1.3V without hyper-threading.  Based on your response I decided to install the Win 7 pro 32 bit operating system on a fresh drive and assume that my processor likely won't support Win 10.

The only Win 7 creation media I had was an old CD of win 7 pro pre Service pack 1.  Researching the web I found that I could recontruct Win 7 pro by updating with 6 critical updates using SHA-2 files such that automatic update would again function for a full install and update.  Everything went perfectly until I checked  device manager and found some missing device drivers.  Windows updates failed to update these so I found them on the web and installed them without issue except for the multimedia audio controller.

Windows 7 pro is identifing it as Realtek AC'97 audio but I believe it to be a Sound max digital AC 97 media audio based on web research.  The audio fails to function with the realtek drivers.  I've deleted that driver and tried to search microsoft update for a driver without sucess.  I am unable to find a win 7 32 bit driver for the soundmax system.  Based on the web this apparantly has been an issue for others on these HP machines.  I noticed you have an archieved file regarding this issue on this site with Tadams51 from 02/15/2015 but not able to understand the solution by reviewing the responses.

The hardware ID is:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4341&SUBSYS_006B103C&REV_00

When I delete the driver and device and reboot the computer it shows windows searching for the drivers for the multimedia audio device for some time then installs the Realtek AC'97 drivers again (fail to work) or states that it can't find drivers for the device.  I am hoping you can help me solve this problem as the system is up and fully functional except for this issue.  Greatly appreciate any help in locating and identifing the driver needed to get this operational.  Thanks.

Don.

til I needed a nstalling the critical updates till when installed.

Hi, Don:

There are no Vista or W7 drivers for your notebook's audio, but you should be able to use the XP driver from your notebook's support page.

ADI 1981B Audio Driver for Windows 2000/XP

sp28552.exe

See if the auto install method works.

If not, manually install the driver as follows:

Go to the device manager.

Click on the Multimedia audio controller needing the driver.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the 'Browse my computer for driver software' option.

Then at the bottom of that window, select the 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.'

Click on Have Disk and browse to the driver file folder that was created when you ran the file, which will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp28552>SMAXWDM>W2K_XP>smwdmATI (setup information file, click Next and the driver should install.

Then restart the PC and you should have audio.

If you manually explore the file contents of that folder, you will see driver support for the hardware ID in that smwdmATI (setup information file, as indicated by this partial copy and paste of the file contents:

I have never been to access any support information on my laptop on the HP web site.  When I enter the SN and PN listed on the laptop on my service tag it states that it is invalid.  The  SN is CND4330WOS and the PN is PC742AV.  Is there any other way to access the support page?

You won't be able to access your notebook's driver page via HP support because they retired the zv5000 model series years ago in accordance with their 10-year consumer PC retirement policy.

Fortunately, the driver page is still floating around out there and is only accessible by doing a general internet search.

Here's the link to the driver support page:  Has drivers for W2K and XP only which were the only OS supported for the model series.

There is one other driver I'm sure you will need and that is the Intel graphics driver.

If you get the sound to work using the driver I gave you, the graphics adapter should be listed as either a video controller or a 'Standard VGA adapter' under the Display adapters device manager category.

No doubt you have found that you can't change the screen resolution to the supported values for the display, or put the PC i sleep mode.

That is because the graphics driver isn't installed.

However, I don't know if the XP graphics driver will work, so when you get around to that, post the hardware ID for the video controller/Standard VGA adapter, and I will see if your notebook's Intel graphics adapter is new enough to use the XP driver on W7.

Thanks so much for thr HP zv5000 link.   The link to the multimedia driver in XP/Windows 20000 loaded the sound software on the Windows 7 pro system nearly flawlessly.  When installing directly the program ran to a warning that noted this was not the correct software version but when I clicked close on the warning the computer gave me an option to reinstall and let the computer adjust the software.  I choose that option and the install installed and activated flawlessly.  I am still in wonder how great the sound is on this old machine.  Thanks so much for the help.

As you suggested in your last response the graphic adapter is not installed  The device manager shows the standard VGA graphics adapter from microsoft in use.  I bought this laptop new and it still has all its stickers in place.  It has an ATI sticker on it reporting the ATI graphics installed.  So from the HP support page you forwarded, I noted that it had a driver for Nividia and ATI on the site.  I downloaded the ATI driver SP29882 and tried to direct install it on the computer but that driver opens to the same ADI Sound max driver I just installed.  Thought I just grabbed the wrong driver but after review the driver sp29882 loads the same install software as sp28552 so I cancelled that install.  It looks like the listed ATI driver is mislabelled for the ATI graphics for this laptop on this support page.   I guess I am now trying to locate that specific ATI driver for this adapter.

I checked the hardware ID for the graphics adapter: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5835&SUBSYS_006B103&REV_00 was retrieved..   I was wondering if this was the ATI graphics and also wondering how to search the vender and device from the hardware ID on the web so I could do this myself in the future.  I am really close to a full functional computer.  Thanks so much for your help.  Once I solve this last issue I plan to clone a backup for this drive for future mishaps.  Thanks again

You're very welcome, Don.

Glad the XP driver worked on W7.

I see a totally different file number for the graphics driver on your notebook's support page:

ATI M9/M10/RC300M VGA Driver for Windows 2000/XP

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp30501-31000/sp30791.exe

I explored the driver file contents of sp30791 and the graphics driver setup information file that has that ID is C2_24159

"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 IGP" = BR_24046_ati2mtag_RS300M, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5835&SUBSYS_006B103C

So, try the auto install and manual install method to install the graphics driver.

If the driver works, you probably won't have the Windows Aero option but hopefully you will be able to change the screen resolution, put the PC to sleep and have better graphics performance.

I don't know if you are aware that Microsoft released a version of the Edge browser for W7 which works fine and has taken the place of Internet Explorer which has been retired and is no longer supported.

You can download MS Edge from the link below:
