After update in December 2025, Pavilion laptop model 14 has been stuck on automatic repair. Hard reboot didn’t work. Can this be fixed? There was nothing wrong until I installed the update.

Which one of these is your laptop?

You installed an update and some devices are no longer working. You need to either uninstall the update or alternately roll back the device driver to an older one that was working before.

If you cannot start windows normally, then bring up windows in the safe mode. How to start windows in safe mode

1. Either uninstall the problem update or even better just fix the device.

2. Rollback the driver that the Device Managers shows as failing or is the wrong one.

If you tried the above and was unable to get into safe mode then try booting a USB that has window 11. Do NOT install 11,
just boot it up and select the repair option

Use an 8gb flash drive and download the win11 ISO Multilanguage edition.

Then Advanced => Troubleshoot => Startup Settings => Safe mode

Once you get into safe mode then bring up the device manager and rollback the video driver

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately none of these solutions work here, can’t get past the screen saying ‘Preparing automatic repair’ or just the hp logo.

Stuck at HP logo indicates the system it not starting up.

"Preparing automatic repair" indicates windows has started but senses a problem and the OS needs to be repaired.  Generally one or the other occurs,  not both.

see if there is a real hardware problem:  Try UEFI diagnostics;  see if there is a hardware problem: Watch this video.  Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.
If a component fails during the UEFI test then Click here to check warranty

If you pass diagnostics then the OS needs to be repaired.  Try the windows safe boot as described above.

Let me know what you find out.

Got to screen diagnostics using your advice and the YouTube video, passed them all then back into preparing automatic repair.
thanks for all the info. Think it’s time to buy a new laptop (Dell!).
