Hi @jbugs,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with volume control not working on your HP notebook. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
Have you recently made any changes on the PC before the issue started?
Did this happen after a recent update?
Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers?
Have you tried to update all the drivers either using Windows update or using HP Support Assistant?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Perform a Hard reset on the notebook ( To release any electrostatic charges present on the PC):
Uninstall the Audio drivers from Device manager:
Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.
Then check the box delete the software for this device.
Then restart the computer and update the Bios, Chipset and Audio drivers on your PC, from our HP support website, using this link: Click here
Then restart the computer and check again.
If the issue persists, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Go to Search, type services.msc, and go to Services.
- Find Windows Audio, right click on it, and go to Properties.
- First, make sure that Startup type is set to Automatic.
- Then, click on Stop, and wait for the process to stop.
- Now, click to Start again.
- Restart your computer, and check if the issue is resolved.
- You may restart the laptop once.
If the issue persists then I suggest you to perform a Windows Refresh (repair). This will not delete your personal data. This will fix any corruption in the Windows operating system and the drivers.
Please keep me posted. I will keep a watch for your reply. Please perform all the steps diligently and patiently as this should do the trick for you.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.
Regards,
Jeet_Singh

I have a DELL P58F. A month ago, the "volume bar" apppeared on my screen, stayed there, and stuck the volume at 100%. How do i make this go away without uninstalling drivers, going into my BIOS, etc. I'm not a computer guy, I'm 68 years old, etc.
Help me!!
