Hi @Lilly0,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A purple screen on your HP laptop that remains blank, with only the mouse being functional, can be caused by various issues, such as a display driver problem, a hardware failure, or an issue with the operating system.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to try:

Hard Reset the Laptop

  • Turn off your laptop completely by holding the power button for about 10 seconds.
  • Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • Unplug the power adapter and, if possible, remove the battery (if it's a removable battery).
  • Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter (and battery, if applicable), then try turning on the laptop again.

Boot into Safe Mode

Since you can move the mouse, try restarting your laptop and booting into Safe Mode:

  • Restart the laptop, and as soon as it starts up, press the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
  • Select Safe Mode.
  • If the laptop boots into Safe Mode successfully, the issue might be with a driver or software.
  • From Safe Mode, you can try updating or reinstalling the display drivers.

Try a Startup Repair

  • Turn off your laptop, then turn it back on.
  • Immediately press F11 repeatedly (or Esc and then F11) to enter the Recovery Environment.
  • Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, and select Startup Repair.
  • This will attempt to fix any startup issues preventing you from accessing the laptop.

Check for Display/Graphics Issues

If Safe Mode works but the normal boot doesn't, it could be a graphics card issue:

  • Once in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager.
  • Expand Display Adapters, right-click on your graphics driver (e.g., Intel, NVIDIA, AMD), and select Uninstall.
  • Restart the laptop, and Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver.

External Monitor Test

Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable:

  • If the external monitor displays the normal screen, it indicates that the issue could be with the laptop’s internal display or its connection.

System Restore

  • If the laptop was working fine before and you recently installed updates or new software, you can try using System Restore to revert to an earlier point in time.
  • Boot into the Recovery Environment (F11), go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore, and follow the instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
