Hi @heltyA,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP 15-dy2xxx laptop is experiencing issues related to power management settings and possibly the hardware. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Since your laptop doesn’t turn off or respond when the power button is pressed, try performing a hard reset:

Power Off Laptop:

  • If your laptop is on, press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until it completely shuts down.

Disconnect Power and Battery:

  • Unplug the power adapter from the laptop.
  • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.

Drain Residual Power:

  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.

Reconnect and Power On:

  • Reinsert the battery (if removable) and plug the power adapter back in.
  • Press the power button to turn on the laptop.

2. Check Power Settings

If you can power on your laptop but it doesn't respond to the power button as expected:

Boot into Windows:

  • If the laptop starts up, boot into Windows.

Access Power Options:

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  • Click on Choose what the power buttons do on the left sidebar.

Check Power Button Settings:

  • Make sure the settings for When I press the power button are configured correctly. For a quick test, set it to Do nothing or Sleep and see if it changes anything.

3. Update or Reinstall Power Management Drivers

Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Device Manager.

Update Drivers:

  • Expand the System devices section and locate Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or similar.
  • Right-click and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • If updating doesn’t work, try uninstalling the driver by right-clicking and selecting Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

4. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

Enter BIOS/UEFI:

  • Restart your laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing Esc, F2, or another specific key during startup (the key varies by model).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
