Recently inherited an HP Chomebook. Opened and tried to power on. Nothing. Plugged in to see if maybe it just needed charged. Charging indicator went back and forth between a solid amber and blinking amber for appox 8 hours and still did not turn on. Looking to acquire a replacement battery buttttt. I am curious will a Chromebook still turn on with the battery disconnected but still plugged in with power/charging cable or is the battery absolutely needed to power on?

You do not need the battery to operate the Chromebook. If it does not turn on when the battery is removed then either the motherboard is bad or the charger is bad.

It is likely there is a hardware problem.
Verify the charger is the correct one and is not defective.
Possibly, but unlikely, the battery has a short and the charger is unable to run the Chromebook because all the electricity is going into the battery.
There is a battery replacement video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqX2smXfZA0
As you can see here, there are a lot of Chromebooks, so the video may not be correct.
Please provide the Product ID or better assistance.
I would pop the Chromebook open and disconnect the battery and see if the charger can run the book. The battery is needed to keep the date and time accurate as well as provide the correct hardware info to windows. Without the battery you would have to enter the bios and save the settings every time. But at least you would know if the Chromebook was working.

The charger seems to be correct. It says HP on it and was the only charger around it. It's a HP Chromebook - 14a-na0023cl. I popped the battery out to check the voltage and couldn't get a reading when I tested black to white, red to white, back to red. Plugged the charger/power supply in and the power light would flash white but no power on so I am thinking I will need to get the new battery.....just wish I was able to verify it could power up before dumping money onto it.....not knowing if anything else could be wrong with it.
