On Wednesday, when I tried to use my laptop, it appears like it had received and installed a Windows update.
I had previously disabled the password requirement on startup, so, I was surprised when it prompted me for a password.
It WILL NOT accept my password. Sure, it's possible that I forgot what my password was, but I am 99% sure I am using the correct password.
I have reset my Microsoft password and it will not accept that new password.
HP seems to think that the path to "password recovery" is to reset to factory settings.
Can anyone offer any advice as to why my laptop wants a password after I've disabled it - or - why it won't accept my password anyways?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
This could be because of the windows update on your PC that may have enabled the password. If the password you are entering is incorrect, then this issue may occur.
Just to make sure that this is not a keyboard issue, at the login screen, click the Ease Of Access icon in the bottom right corner, select On-Screen Keyboard and try entering your password using this.
Another thing to try, if you normally sign-on with an email and password, would be to see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.

Click here for more info on resetting the Microsoft account password.
HP cannot recover or reset your password if it is lost or forgotten. HP strongly recommends creating a password reset disk to enable you to reset your password in case it is forgotten. If you do not have a password reset disk and you forget your password, you may be directed to perform a full recovery to original factory conditions and will lose any data that was not backed up to an external location.
If there are no other accounts with Administrator rights, you do not have a password reset disk, try these other options:
-
You can perform an HP System Recovery to completely erase all files, including password information, and go back to the way the system was when it was first purchased. For more information, see HP Guided Solution - Performing an HP System Recovery.
-
Call local computer repair and service stores. Local stores may offer password recovery services for a fee but results cannot be guaranteed. This service is not available from HP and using password recovery services is done at your own risk.
-
If you are unable to locate a local service to recover your password, one alternative may be to obtain password recovery software. This software is not available from HP and using password recovery software is done at your own risk.

Thanks for the advice - at this point I have attmpted 26 different password combinations and another 5 pin numbers.
I don't believe that I have forgotten my password and that something else is goin on.

That's unfortunate. Please follow the steps mentioned in my earlier post to perform a recovery.
You can also contact Microsoft to check if there are any other available options to retrieve your password or unlock your Microsoft account.
Keep me posted for further assistance.
