Hi @njikareen,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 14 Laptop's power and caps lock lights are on, but the screen remains black, it indicates that the laptop is receiving power and is turned on, but there might be an issue preventing the display from working correctly. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Hard Reset: Disconnect the laptop from the power source, remove the battery (if possible), and then press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. This will discharge any residual power and reset some internal hardware components. After that, reinsert the battery (if removed) and plug in the power adapter. Try turning on the laptop again.
  • External Monitor Test: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or a TV using an HDMI cable (if your laptop has an HDMI port). Make sure the external display is powered on and set to the correct input. Then, turn on your laptop. If the external monitor displays the laptop's content, it could indicate an issue with your laptop's built-in display.
  • Brightness Adjustment: It might sound basic, but check if the screen brightness is set too low. Press the brightness increase button (usually represented by a sun icon) on your keyboard to see if the display becomes visible.
  • Backlight Issue: In some cases, the backlight of the laptop screen might fail to function. Shine a flashlight directly onto the screen at an angle and look closely. If you can see faint images or icons on the screen, it suggests a backlight problem. In this situation, you might need to have the backlight or display panel repaired or replaced.
  • Faulty Display Cable: The issue could be related to a loose or damaged display cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. If you have experience with hardware, you can try opening the laptop (if it's not under warranty) and check the cable connections. Otherwise, take it to a professional technician for inspection.
  • Memory/RAM Issue: Sometimes, faulty RAM can cause a black screen during startup. Try reseating or replacing the RAM modules one by one (if you have multiple) to see if it makes any difference.
  • Hardware Failure: It's possible that some internal hardware components, such as the motherboard or graphics card, have failed. In this case, you'll need to take the laptop to an authorized service center for diagnosis and repair.
  • Battery Issue: If the battery is faulty or not holding a charge properly, it could affect the laptop's functionality. Try running the laptop directly from the power adapter without the battery and see if it makes any difference.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
