Hi,
i enjoy playing with computers so any suggestions you have I am very happy to do myself. I have already installed a new ssd and increased RAM to a point where I had a quick laptop. Worked great for 6 months since upgrades.
My problem is that the laptop won’t turn on. I get 5 slow blinks followed by 3 fast blinks. I think this points to a system board failure.
Cant open bios having tried numerous combinations of disconnecting power/ holding the on-off button/ pressing f10.
It looks as if POST isn’t running either.
Any suggestions as to how I can get my laptop back up and running will be gratefully received.
kind regards

Hi Lil-boy-blue,
From the suggested remedies offered I am only able to attempt reseating the "unseated " components. As I mentioned earlier my hardware knowledge goes as far as the hard-drive and RAM. Both of which I checked (I know bios isn't located on either but I stll checked). Bios is based in ROM, if I am correct.
Although I opened the back of my laptop and checked for anything lose, it was merely a visual inspection. I didn't unscrew the mother-board to check for any connections there.
From the bit of research I have done in relation to the laptop not starting I think ROM memory is physically attached to the mother-board.
Seeing as the diagnostic code from my laptop is 5.3
The other suggestions are:
1 Reseat component......Is it possible to reseat ROM (or wherever BIOS is stored)
2 Test known good component.....again is this possible seeing as laptop wont start
3 Replace component or Main-Board as needed......is this prohibitively expensive?
So far this looks to be a shame. I've only had the laptop for under two years and it looks like it is ready for recycling already!
If any one has any further suggestions please let me know. I will keep reading through previous posts to see if I can find a problem similar to mine that was resolved successfully.
Cheers for your time,
Bios123

Hi
Inside the EU there is a 2 year sellers warranty.
The document is a HP original however illogical it seems.
Hopefully one of these documents will cover (and solve) your problem...

Turn off the computer, and then connect the power cord.
Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds.
Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.
The HP BIOS Update screen displays and the recovery begins automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to continue the startup to complete the recovery.
HP BIOS Update recovery in progress
If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows key and the V key. If the screen still does not display, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue. Continue to the next step to install a BIOS recovery file from the HP website.
If the Power light turns off, the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the button for only 2 to 3 seconds.

Hi Lil_boy_blue,
Many thanks for getting back to me with such helpful suggestions. I have run into another wall if you would be so kind as to suggest a way over.
I have tried the first suggestions of holding the windows key with either B or V, pressing the on button and waiting for the bios to run. No luck there.
I moved on to downloading the bios to a separate laptop. All runs fine until I am asked to select a USB flash drive to save to. Although a cleared USB flash drive in FAT32 format is plugged into the laptop it doesn't show.
If I choose to copy the bios files manually I do get to select the USB though the files aren't saved as HP_RECOVERY.
Also, the update option isn't showing as available ( not sure if this makes any difference)
Perhaps I should download the files manually and then save them into a folder i create myself called HP_RECOVERY.
That the bios file isnt saving to the USB plugged into a Sony laptop is a separate issue to the bios not running on my HP laptop. Looks like I've got two problems at the moment.
Again any suggestions very welcome,
Bios123

Hi
I think the BIOS download is a dud.
It contains the BIOS update, but not the mechanism to complete a USB drive and install.

Hi Lil_boy_blue,
Those where there the files I managed to download also. Thanks for confirming that something isn't correct with the download.
I may have hit a wall, but it looks not to be a wall of my making . My assumption would be HP would like to correct this issue.
Do you know who/ where I might contact to ask to fix this problem?
Kind regards,
