Hi Lil_boy_blue,
Tried your suggestion of trying to start up the bios from the usb. No luck.
I think my problem now is that the laptop doesn't appear to be powering on.
There is a light on at the jack where the 240v power lead connects to the laptop. This indicates that there is power been fed to the laptop and its battery.
The light that indicates the laptop is on does not come on. There is no sound of the fan engaging or any other blinking lights.
Have looked up what to do if the laptop isn't powering up and all suggestions point towards -
is there 240v being applied to your laptop? YES.
Is your battery charging? YES
Was so close to getting my laptop back working. Particularly after getting the bios downloaded on to the usb. This latest problem has only occurred after i removed and reinstalled the hard-drive
It looks like my laptop has taken enough punishment and given up - or is there anything else that I can try to breath some life into it?

Hi
First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.
Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
Rinse and Repeat
AND/OR - Power on your PC, press Esc (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).
AND/OR
HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs within the Windows operating system in order to diagnose hardware failures. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows comes pre-installed on new HP computers, but if not on yours, download here:- http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp93001-93500/sp93457.exe

Hi Lil_Boy_Blue,
I tried previous suggestions with no joy. I think the problem goes deeper than been able to access "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows" .
As I stated in my previous post there appears to be no power. When I switch on the computer I would expect POST to be run and for there to be a light that would blink a code, indicating the issue. Presently there is nothing, no blinking light, no light indicating the laptop has been switched on.
The only light is at the 240v power port.
My own research on the topic tells me POST and BIOS are stored in ROM. This memory is on the mother board and has its own power supply (i may be wrong ). I have attached a picture of a battery on the mother board that may be in need of replacing.
can this be removed and replaced?
Any help appreciated

Hi,
Was firm taking the battery out and didn't do any damage. It is designed to be removed!
Put my dc voltmeter on the battery and got 3v which is what the battery is designed to hold. So it looks like that isn't the issue.
Anyone else got any suggestions or should I just accept defeat and buy a new laptop?

Hi
The CMOS/RTC battery can be contributory to some problems, but not yours. If it was removed for more than a few seconds the Real Time Clock and the BIOS settings that were backed up by it may be lost.
No real harm, just expect the date to 1980 or similar.
DEAD?
This will not work for everyone, but you may be lucky?
HP Notebooks and Mobile Workstations -
No Power, No Boot, No Display When Power Button Is Pressed
NOTE: Be sure the battery is installed in the computer and it has sufficient power before continuing. Due to the design of the Embedded Controller/Keyboard Controller, the power supply must be disconnected and the computer must be powered with battery power to reset the Embedded Controller/Keyboard Controller.
Unplug the AC power from the computer.
Press and hold the power button for more than 12 seconds.
Release the power button (after at least 12 seconds).
The computer will power on and should boot normally after releasing the power button.
Re-connect the AC power to the computer.
NOTE: In case the battery is not charging after performing the steps to reset the Embedded Controller, unplug and re-plug in the AC power again.

Hi Lil_Boy_Blue,
That last response was from another user Reefer33, not from me.
Unfortunately, my laptop is still not responding. Tried starting the laptop with just the battery and holding down the start button for over 12 seconds. No reaction at all from the laptop.
Currently Im studying for the CCNA routing and switching exam. Part of the exam is understanding ROM/ flash/ NVRAM etc. The boot sequence of the router. Knowing where the configuration register is etc.
Im not convinced yet that the laptop is beyond repair as I've not had it for 2 years yet and its still new. Is there a manual that I could refer to for this laptop 15-bs158sa that can explain its start-up config/ POST/ BIOS etc
Thanks,
