Thank you! I was able to get past the initial login.  Now I get System Diagnostics.  One of which "F4" says the Hard disk Test Failed.  Should I assume this is fried?  And can I assume that it would be difficult for a trashed laptop recycle place to get personal information from it?

Other messages - Boot Device not found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk

hard disk <3F0>

Bottom Line-I justwant to recycle this and not worry about personal information being taken or used.

Any help you can provide would be great!

Thanks!

Hi,

It does sound like the hard drive has failed, however, the data may be easily accessible by simply placing the drive in an external enclosure.  My best advice, if you're recycling the notebook, would be to remove the drive beforehand - you can then destroy it at leisure :generic:

The procedure for removing the HDD is detailed starting on Page 61 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
