Notebook had f.07 bios and booted in legacy mode. After latest f.20 bios update it doesn't boot stating that an OS must be installed. Switched to UEFI and back to Legacy and changed to HD to a previously cloned for backup (which booted perfectly before) with same behaviour.  Will have to format to UEFI, but it's a very big bug to have Legacy option which does not work. Also tried another clean OS (MBR legacy) HD with no success.

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting issues with your notebook after the bios update, I am glad to assist you.

Update the Bios, chipset, and drivers using HP Support Assistant.

Download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: Click here

  • HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
  • Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  • Click Updates in the My notebook pane
  • Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  • Updates list in HP Support Center
  • Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  • Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  • Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Let me know how it goes.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.

Your solution has nothing to do with the problem:  Windows does NOT boot on Legacy mode. Tried with two different HD which worked well before BIOS update and also work well if BIOS is downgraded.

The ONLY way machine will boot is under UEFI.  Legacy mode is BROKEN on new BIOS, and the only solution is to repair it on newer BIOS, or delete Legacy option and warn users because machine won't boot anymore in that mode.
