elitebook 8460p

Hi there,

my Elitebook 8460p fails to start:

I push the power button, the lights go on, the screen shows the hp logo and "Press the ESC key for setup" and after a second the computer switches off again automaticaly. This happens every time I try to start. Until yesterday everything was fine, but since today the start fails.

I removed the CD drive and the HDD just to test - it didnt change anything.
Removing battery and AC power and pressing the start button for 30 seconds (an idea I found when searching the topic) didnt help as well.

Any ideas anyone?

Hello @okeo ,

have you tried to replace the RTC battery?

See Maintenance and Service Guide page 78.

I just tried to get to the RTC battery, but I wasnt able to.

The graphic in the pdf didnt help at all - I could not locate the battery in my 8460p!
Are there different models? Revisions?

I tried to find informations, but the posts I found refered to a video, tha couldnt be loaded from hp:

Do I have to remove the cd-rom bay?

BTW why could the replacement of the battery help the booting?

Hello @okeo ,

I had several old notebooks which didn’t start up anymore. After replacing the cmos battery and loading the standard settings in the BIOS that old machine started.
But of course it is only one possible cause for an old notebook to not start up.

I also found a video that shows how to disassemble the notebook. You will see the CMOS battery around 7‘44“.

It might be a little bit difficult to disassemble that notebook for people who aren‘t experienced with this kind of work. If you feel unsure, it might be better to ask someone who works in a PC repair shop.
