Notebook started booting up very slowly a couple of days ago. Now it will oly get to the screen before the login and stops there, or goes black. Can't boot in safemode. Was able to get to F2 tests. System diagnostic test gave this failure id# QC7QGX-7P68GV-GXGJMF-602T503 Now what? No recent new programs downloaded.

Microsoft itself offers the Windows 10 install media for download through the Media Creation Tool site:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Just select the option to download .iso for installation on another computer and select the option to make a usb disk (4 gig minimum I think) and the correct version of Windows 10 (Regular or Pro, likely regular 64 bit). You can also use the HP recovery disk you made. The advantage there is it will reinstall all the original apps, where the Windows 10 thing will install Windows 10 only. You can then upgrade with the Windows 10 installer and have the apps.
We can help you locate any drivers you may still need after Windows 10 install and update.
Hard drives are available through amazon.com:
That is a 500 gig. Not sure how large (capacity) is the one you have now. Make sure whatever you get is 7mm thick not 9.5mm, which are more common. Have to be careful.

Here's your Service Manual:
See p. 33 for instructions. Your model is a custom to order so I cannot tell whether you have a standard superslim 2.5 inch 7mm SATA hard drive or an M.2 gumstick type drive. Instructions are in the Manual for either type and you want to order the same type of drive you had, otherwise you need extra hardware that is very hard to locate. Do you happen to know what type of hard drive you have?
Also this replacement is not real easy to do. It requires extensive disassembly. If you still want to tackle it post back and we can help you find parts and walk you through software reinstallation. Where do you live (country)?

Thank you for your quick response. Is there a way I can tell which hard drive I have? If I take the cover off, would the HD have some marking that would tell me? I would like to replace the hard drive myself (with your help). I am not terribly experienced but I did replace the hard drive in a little Toshiba notebook some years ago.

You are so great to get back to me so fast!!!
It is the big kind: p/n 0J43635 SATA 6.0Gb/s
replace with HP SPARE 778186-005
GB1580
I took a picture of it with my phone but it is too large to be inserted here.

I am impressed you got it open. Where are you located (country)? Do you have any HP rescovery media (DVD or thumb drive)? Did you have Windows 10 installed and activated? If so, getting a recovery disk is very easy and free. If it was Windows 7-8.1 not so much.

There was a YouTube video that showed me exactly how to get it open. I live in the US (MidSouth region). I made a recovery USB flashdrive when I first bought the notebook per instructions. However I did not make a new one when I installed Windows 10. How do I get a recovery disk with Windows 10 and where do I buy a new hard drive? Questions, questions, questions. 🙂
