Hi all,

The long and short of this is that the hd appears to have a partition issue

The original issue started when I upgraded to windows 10 from win 8.1

Every now and then the system would show a security file error which would clear itself after a while

I am now sitting with a hd error GLQ6KR-7PV89P-XD7WLJ- 60S103 and the laptop will not boot the old win 8.1

Questions

1) can this be fixed ie the had repartitioned / formatted

2) do I need a new HD

Thanks for all the help.

John

Hi,

The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here.

If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.

Hi,

The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.

 1Tb Notebook Hard Drive.

The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 67 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

Regarding reinstalling the operating system on the new drive, there are two options.

1.  Use your Recovery Media to reinstall the original Operating System ( Windows 8.1 ) on the new drive.

2.  An alternative option, if you're intending to upgrade the notebook to Windows 10 again, would just be to perform a clean installation of 10 - as the machine has been previously upgraded to 10, a hardware profile ( Digital Entitlement ) will have been recorded by the activation servers.

As long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade from 8.1, you can just create your own installation media and perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed.

Hi, Thanks for the info,

Yes, the win 10 was installed under the freebie update a while back, so it will reinstall again as required.

Just one more question. I want to keep the laptop original as far as I can, do you know what brand  and model the original hd inside is before I open and order a new one.

thanks

Hi John,

I'm guessing from the Model No. that you live in the UK - if that's correct, the drive on the following link is what HP list your notebook shipping with.
