Hi @Nobeard2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
For an HP 15 laptop displaying a black screen with no cursor and no disc activity, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Power off the laptop completely.
- Disconnect any external devices (USB, HDMI, etc.).
- Remove the battery (if removable) and unplug the power adapter.
- Hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery and power adapter (without other peripherals) and try to turn the laptop on.
Check for Display Output
- Connect an external monitor to the laptop using HDMI or VGA.
- Switch display modes by pressing the "Fn" key + the display key (usually F4 or F5 on HP laptops).
- If the external display works, the issue may be with your laptop screen.
Perform a BIOS Reset
- Power off the laptop.
- Press and hold the Windows key + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds, and release both.
- If the BIOS update screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
Check RAM
- If you are comfortable with hardware, you can remove and reinsert the RAM. Sometimes, a poor connection can cause boot issues.
- If there are two RAM sticks, try booting with one stick at a time.
Startup Recovery
- Turn on the laptop and press F11 repeatedly to access the HP Recovery Manager or Windows Recovery Environment.
- If successful, you can try a system restore or startup repair.
Check for Sounds or Beeps
- Listen for any beeps when the laptop powers on. These can indicate hardware issues (e.g., RAM or motherboard problems).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
