I have bought an new laptop HP ENVY x360. But when I tried to start the laptop and set it up It just wont switch on. The power button shows light and even the keyboard backlight works. But nothing displays on the screen. The laptop is fully charged and I even tried to turn on the brightness. Nothing is working

Hi @ruru09

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Got it — your brand-new HP Envy x360 powers on (power light + keyboard backlight) but the screen stays black and it doesn’t boot into setup. Since it’s new, this could be a simple initialization glitch or a hardware issue.

Let’s walk through checks you can safely try before deciding if it needs replacement/repair:

Step 1: Basic checks

Make sure no USB drives or SD cards are connected (sometimes they prevent boot).

Try pressing Esc or F2 right after pressing the power button — do you see the HP logo or BIOS menu?

Step 2: Hard reset (forces hardware reset)

Turn laptop off.

Disconnect charger + all peripherals.

Hold down power button for ~15 seconds.

Reconnect charger only → try powering on again.

Step 3: External display test

Connect the laptop to a monitor/TV via HDMI or USB-C display output.

Press Win + P (or Fn + F4 on some HPs) to cycle through display modes.
👉 If image shows on external monitor → laptop screen/cable issue.

Step 4: BIOS / Backlight check

Right after pressing power, tap Esc repeatedly → BIOS startup menu should appear.

If screen is still black, shine a flashlight at the screen — if you see a faint image, the display backlight may be faulty.

Step 5: Reset BIOS (if it’s trying but not posting)

Power on and immediately hold Windows key + B (or Windows + V) + press Power for ~2–3 sec.

Release Power but keep holding Win + B/V until you hear beeps or BIOS recovery screen.

Step 6: Hardware/DOA possibility

Since this is a brand-new laptop, it should at least show the HP logo/BIOS.

If nothing works (internal + external displays both black, no BIOS), it’s likely a hardware defect (motherboard, RAM, or screen connection).

At this stage:

If purchased less than 14–30 days ago → request an exchange/refund from the retailer (fastest).

Otherwise, contact HP Support for warranty service.
