Hi @labguru53,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The message you are seeing indicates that your laptop is attempting to repair its file system. This often happens if the system did not shut down properly or if there was some corruption in the file system.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Wait for the Process to Complete

First, give the process some time to complete. Depending on the extent of the file system issues and the speed of your hardware, this could take some time.

Power Cycle the Laptop

If the process appears to be stuck for an extended period (e.g., several hours) without progress, try the following steps:

Force Shutdown:

  • Press and hold the power button until the laptop turns off.
  • Wait for a few seconds and then turn it back on.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop.
  • As it starts up, repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8 for some laptops) until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
  • Select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Use Startup Repair

If the laptop still won't boot, you can use the built-in Startup Repair tool:

Access Advanced Startup Options:

  • Turn off your laptop and then turn it on.
  • As it starts up, press F8 repeatedly to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Select "Repair Your Computer" and press Enter.

Run Startup Repair:

  • In the System Recovery Options, select your keyboard layout and click "Next."
  • Select your operating system and click "Next."
  • Click "Startup Repair" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Use System Restore

If Startup Repair doesn't work, try using System Restore:

Access Advanced Startup Options:

  • Follow the steps above to access the System Recovery Options.

Run System Restore:

  • In the System Recovery Options, select "System Restore."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your system to a previous working state.

Check Disk for Errors

If you can access Safe Mode or a command prompt, you can run a disk check:

Open Command Prompt:

  • Access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Select "Repair Your Computer" and then "Command Prompt."

Run CHKDSK:

  • In the Command Prompt, type chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions. This process may take some time.

Reinstall the Operating System

If none of the above steps work, you may need to reinstall the operating system. Ensure you have backed up any important data before doing this:

Create a Bootable USB Drive:

  • Use another computer to download the Windows installation media from Microsoft's website.
  • Create a bootable USB drive using the Windows Media Creation Tool

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
