Hi @bilo_z,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand. If you have already uninstalled HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows but the message still appears when you start the computer, we should first identify exactly which HP component or startup entry is generating it.

As a first check, please open Settings > Apps > Startup and see whether you still have an HP Diagnostics-related entry listed there. If you find one, please let us know the exact name shown. Windows also allows startup applications to be managed from Task Manager > Startup apps.

Please don't delete anything from the Windows Registry or remove any HP files manually yet. We want to make sure we identify the correct component before removing anything.

Also, could you please provide:

  • Your exact HP PC model/product number
  • The exact wording of the message that appears at startup
  • A photo or screenshot of the message, if possible
  • Whether the message appears before Windows starts or after you reach the Windows desktop

This distinction is important because HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows runs within Windows, while HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI runs outside the operating system.

Once we have the exact message and your HP product details, we can determine what is causing it and guide you through the appropriate way to remove it without affecting any required HP or Windows startup components.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your reply. You provided better info than AI or most other replies. I liked the most your mentioning not to act until we identify the problem.

The issue is a pop up message that "a link to hpdiagnostics is missing" upon starting the computer and while windows is loading, almost around the last step, meaning it is a start up message. This means it should be found among that start ups, but it is not found in Settings or in Task manager, and you should have known this as part of the uninstall process.

Nevertheless, of all the suggested steps recommended by the different people replied in HP community as well as by AI,  I was able to get to the file (DiagsCap.exe) that triggers that message and when I deleted it after confirming it was not harmful, the pop up windows shows up for a second without any message, but it still pops up. At that point, it's hardly anything. I stopped deleting anything relating to that when I realized that "diagnostics" files belong to Windows and HP and are not exclusive to the pop up windows.

I am yet to figure out if I deleted any necessary diagnostics file(s) for Windows or HP.

Thanks again

Hi @bilo_z,

Thank you for coming back with those details, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain exactly what you found. It is helpful to know that DiagsCap.exe was triggering the message and that, after removing it, the message is now only appearing briefly without the original text.

You were right to stop removing files once you found that other Diagnostics components may be used by Windows or HP. I would not recommend deleting any additional files until we can identify exactly which component is responsible for the remaining startup entry. This will also help avoid removing something required by the system or another HP application.

Since the startup entry is not appearing in Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps, we would like to look at the exact HP system configuration and determine what is still calling the missing HP Diagnostics link.

Please send the following details to us via private message:

  • Exact HP PC model
  • Product number
  • Serial number
  • Current Windows 11 version/build
  • If possible, a screenshot of the brief pop-up that now appears during startup

With the product and system details, we can check the available HP information and try to identify the remaining startup reference and the appropriate way to remove it without affecting Windows or required HP components.

For now, please do not delete any additional files related to HP Diagnostics or Windows Diagnostics. Once we have the PC details, we can take a closer look and try to find the best supported solution.
