My HP Pavilion laptop won't open, screen is black. The white light blinks on the board, and an orange light blinks next to the power input.

Hi @SteveJochum

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Based on the description of your HP Pavilion laptop with a black screen and blinking LED lights, it appears that there is a potential hardware issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

Identify the Blink Code:

  • HP laptops often use blinking LEDs to indicate specific hardware errors. The pattern of blinks (such as the number of blinks and their colors) can help diagnose the issue. For instance, the blinking orange light next to the power input might suggest an issue with the battery or power adapter.

Check Power Supply:

  • Ensure the power adapter is working properly. Try connecting the adapter directly to a power outlet, bypassing any power strips or surge protectors, and check if the orange light persists.
  • If possible, test the laptop with another compatible power adapter.

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if it is detachable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning the laptop on again.

Remove External Devices:

  • Disconnect all external devices such as USB drives, printers, and external monitors to rule out any interference.

Inspect for Error Codes:

  • Count the number of blinks from the white light on the keyboard. This can indicate a specific error code that can be looked up in the laptop’s manual or on HP’s support website.

Reset Memory Modules:

  • If you feel comfortable, try reseating the RAM modules. Sometimes loose RAM can cause boot issues.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be a deeper hardware problem, potentially with the motherboard, that would require professional service. In this case, contacting HP phone support team or taking the laptop to an authorized repair center is recommended.
