Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP Pavillion G4 series laptop. I read that the laptop does not boot into Windows and the display is blank with the blinking cursor. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.
To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- Please let me know the exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l
- Did any software changes or updates happen on the laptop recently?
- Did any hardware changes take place?
- Did you receive any error message before this started? If yes, then what was it?
Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Power off the laptop. (disconnect any USB devices connected to it).
- Remove the battery out.
- Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
- Power ON the laptop.
If the laptop powers on fine and boots into Windows then you may stop here. Else please continue with the below steps:
- Power on the laptop and hit the F11 key repeatedly. This should make the laptop boot into the recovery partition of the laptop.
- if the recovery partition is not accessible then I suggest you run the hardware diagnostics on the laptop:
-
Turn off the computer.
-
Use one of the following methods to open the HP System Diagnostics:
-
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the HP System Diagnostics program opens.
-
Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup menu opens. Then press F2.

- The System Diagnostics window allows you to run several diagnostic tests. Each test determines if the hardware is functioning properly, and displays an error message and a warranty ID if there is a hardware failure.
- Please initiate a test on the hard drive and the memory later. The charger must be connected during the tests as the tests may take a long time.
If the tests pass then you run the Microsoft startup repair via the steps mentioned below:
-
Turn off the computer.
-
Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.
-
Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.

- Under I need help immediately, click Microsoft Startup Repair.
I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂
