Hello, not entirely sure if this is where I should post this but every time I start up my computer, the Disc usage goes from 0-100% within seconds, stays there for several minutes, and then begins to progressively drop while still spiking to 100. I play videogames (the requirements for which this laptop theoretically meets easily) and if I start anything more taxing than Google Chrome, the laptop will immedately restart as if the battery had been yanked out and replaced. I have only noticed this happen within the first 15 minutes of starting my computer, which is why I checked memory use.
I have a few screenshots here, which includes system info, and the Serial Number is [edited] with a Model Number of W2M88UA.
I have attempted turning off some of the data collection apps that run automatically on Windows 10, and it seemed to help when I did it initially, but the problem has persisted since then, although it does seem to recover from the overuse with less time now. I have also run a Virus/Malware scan with both the Antivirus I use and Windows Defender and both came back clean.
I'm wondering if this could just be an issue with the age of the laptop (warranty did expire 7 months ago), or if there are other steps I could take to attempt to mitigate this. Any help or advice would be extremely appreciated.

Hi aigeorge,
The part about the computer restarting when playing videogames puzzles me but it might be because your computer is unable to handle the load. This doesn't occur when the disk usage calms down - am I right?
I'm looking at your laptop's specifications and unfortunately it looks like you're running a 5400RPM hard drive and although they are cost-effective, they don't provide the fastest boot times.
So technically the 100% disk usage at startup is pretty normal. Plus the aging hard drive factors in. You could upgrade the hard drive to an SSD for around $200 or less and the HP Experts would be able to help you with that.
For now what I would want you to do is this:
- Open Task Manager as soon as the computer starts up
- Refer to the processes tab
- You'll see name "Name," "CPU," etc but hit "Disk"
- Screenshot the processes - it'll be in highest disk usage order
Also while you're there, go to the Startup tab and screenshot that. I can recommend disabling a few so that your computer doesn't have too big of a load.

Hi @aigeorge,
Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
As I understand, you're in need of support.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
When was the last time it worked fine?
Were there any hardware/software changes made?
What is the operating system on PC?
Let's try these steps from the document: Computer is Slow
You could close the program which is causing high disc usage from Task Manager: Using Task Manager (Windows 10, 😎 and Using Microsoft System Configuration (Windows 10, 😎
If the issue persists, you could try creating a new user account: Click Here.
Let me know how that pans out
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And feel free to ask any other queries as well,
Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking it might just be old, but i wasnt sure if it was completely normal. Since posting this, I have disabled a number of programs set to run on startup, and has at least made the boot time faster. I haven't had any issues with the computer shutting down since I have done that. Thank you for the rest of the advice, I will see if any of it improves my performance any further!
