I am having continual problems with 100% disk usage.   Been tying to resolve this for a long time.  Occasionally disk usage will go down, sometimes even to zero, but then it pops up to 100% again.  There's hardly anything on this laptop other than windows 10, Firefox, and PC Matic.

Hi @bobrew,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does it happen right after startup, or randomly while you’re using the laptop?
  • Have you noticed if it spikes when opening certain apps (like Firefox or PC Matic) ?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try right away:

  • Check Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and look under the “Processes” tab to see which application or service is consuming the most disk.
  • Disable Windows Search Indexing: Sometimes the search indexing service can cause high disk usage. You can temporarily disable it to test if that helps.
  • Turn off Superfetch/SysMain: This Windows service is meant to improve performance but can sometimes cause disk spikes. Disabling it may reduce usage.
  • Update Drivers: Outdated storage drivers can contribute to disk usage problems. Make sure your SATA/SSD drivers are up to date.
  • Check for Malware or Background Scans: Even with PC Matic installed, it’s worth running a full scan to rule out hidden processes.
  • Browser Cache: Since you use Firefox, clearing its cache and disabling unnecessary extensions can sometimes help.

I hope this helps.
