My touchpad isn't working and this is the second time it has happened. I have turned off the power management option in the 12C HID device, and uninstalled it the first time round, and it worked. After 2 weeks there was a window update, it was fine fr a few days until today.I did the same thing as I did previously, but it did not work. I have done this multiple times(uninstalling and restarting) .I have also tried updating the driver but it says it is the latest one (10.0.22621.2506).I thought it was the previous Windows update and I have uninstalled it, but that didn't work.I am currently managing with a wireless mouse. Why is this happening and what can I do? I had this laptop for 4 years, so the warranty is not valid anymore/

@rubyjane56_,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your I2C HID device (which controls the touchpad) is experiencing recurring failures, potentially due to driver conflicts, a Windows update, or even a hardware issue. Since uninstalling and reinstalling the driver worked temporarily, but the problem returned, let's try a more in-depth approach to fixing it.

Reset the Touchpad in BIOS

Since this issue keeps recurring, resetting the BIOS might help.

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Press F10 repeatedly as you turn it back on to enter BIOS.
  • Look for an option related to Internal Pointing Device (Touchpad) (usually under "Advanced" or "Main" settings).
  • Ensure it is enabled. If not, enable it and save changes.
  • Restart and check if the touchpad is working.

Manually Install an Older Driver

  • Go to Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click I2C HID DeviceUpdate Driver.
  • Choose Browse my computer for driversLet me pick from a list.
  • If multiple versions are listed, try selecting an older version.
  • If no older drivers are available, check your laptop’s support page on HP’s website for touchpad drivers.

Reinstall the Synaptics/ELAN Touchpad Driver (If Available)

  • Check under Mice and Other Pointing Devices in Device Manager.
  • If Synaptics/ELAN is listed, right-click it → Uninstall.
  • Restart your laptop and let Windows reinstall it.
  • If Windows does not reinstall the driver, download the latest one from HP’s website.

Enable I2C Services

Windows services related to the I2C HID device might be disabled:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Look for Human Interface Device Service and Intel(R) Integrated Sensor Solution.
  • Make sure their Startup Type is set to Automatic.
  • If stopped, right-click → Start.
  • Restart your laptop.

Perform a Power Drain

  • Turn off your laptop completely.
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug everything back and turn it on.

Check Windows Updates & Roll Back if Necessary

  • If the problem started after a Windows update, try rolling back:
    • Go to SettingsWindows UpdateUpdate history.
    • Click Uninstall updates and remove any recent HID/Touchpad-related updates.

Test for Hardware Issues

  • Boot into Safe Mode (Shift + Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart → Select Safe Mode).
  • If the touchpad works in Safe Mode, a third-party driver is causing conflicts.
  • If it still does not work, it might be a hardware failure.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
