I bought this computer and I immediately upgraded the included Samsung DDR4-3200 4GB ram with a Hynix DDR4-2666 8GB stick.  Everything seemed fine at first.  However, I noticed some problems with playing back videos and audio where it freezes and repeats the words over and over (you must press the power button and restart).  It also freezes the touchpad, but it seems that it usually works again after typing on the keyboard, sometimes it doesn't and you have to logout.

I've installed Windows 10 with the latest BIOS upgrades and updates and the machine had almost identical errors.  The error I get from the system logs are as follows:

2.875279] BERT: Error records from previous boot:
[ 2.875280] [Hardware Error]: event severity: fatal
[ 2.875282] [Hardware Error]: Error 0, type: fatal
[ 2.875284] [Hardware Error]: section_type: Firmware Error Record Reference
[ 2.875285] [Hardware Error]: Firmware Error Record Type: SOC Firmware Err>
[ 2.875286] [Hardware Error]: Revision: 0
[ 2.875287] [Hardware Error]: Record Identifier: 3000100000000

In Windows it gave a similar error sometimes with the message WHEA Driver_Overran_Stack_Buffer.

I've tested all of the components with the HP diagnostic equipment and everything comes back fine with no errors.  I've contacted HP as its under warranty but since it passes all tests, they won't look at it, saying it's a software issue.  I don't have the original RAM to test it, but could I have bought RAM that's incompatible with this machine?  Any suggestions would be helpful.

The service manual Service manual for your laptop calls for DDR4-2666 so it should work. HP laptops like vanilla ram like Crucial, Samsung or Hynix. I'm a big fan of using bootable memory checkers like Memest86+ to really put a good test on the ram, I'd suggest that first.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't mention that I had replaced the RAM recently as I had Team Group memory in before I put in the Hynix. The machine seemed better, but I forgot to unplug the battery when I replaced the RAM. I realized that I hadn't reset anything after the install and after resetting the BIOS to setup defaults I noticed a serious improvement in the stability with this Hynix RAM. Thank you again
