I saw on this post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Can-I-install-a-NVMe-SSD-on-my... that PCIe NVMe SSDs are supported but is the laptop compatible with both Gen 3x4 and Gen 4x4?

No, it supports both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe (PCIe gen 3x4). You can use PCIe 4x4 because it is backward compatible but it won't run at higher speed.
