Are there any challenges for the end user to upgrade memory and hard drive on this particular system? The manual says that only authorized service centers should perform this procedure.

Hi,

Looks like you have the same chasey model as mine...so you are in luck..this is one of the best budget laptop for 2018!!! This laptop has a PCIe slot in it!!! You can actually upgrade the HD to an NVME M.2 SSD Stick..this will make your current computer fly after the new upgrade...NVME is super fast...it will speed up the boot time to almost instantly and everything will open faster too...This is the best upgrade you can do for this laptop...

Look for my post here and you can see the inside of this laptop...your PCIe slot is located at the same location as mine...you can upgrade the RAM to 16GB MAX..

Looks like the biggest challenge is getting the back cover off. Is it tricky to do without breaking the clips?

It's not that bad or hard to open the cover, just go slow and apply steady force to open the cover. I would hold the laptop vertically up an pry the cover.. This way you can see the clips and push them out.. Just go slow and use a plastic flat tip pryer for it.. You can buy them on ebay or Amazon.. It's a good investment..

The screws are under the rubber supports and there are screws on the front edge too...

Start prying the cover from the hings side.  There are opening that allow you to split the flat plastic pryer into it...Then work your way around the cover..

Good Luck.. It's not hard..
