16GB RAM upgrade for HP Pavilion DV7-4183CL

Dear all,

Am super confused with all the tech stuff flying about.

Need to upgrade to a 16GB RAM setup to get the best juice out of gaming. Am currently running the stock 6GB (4+2) setup that just doesn't cut it. Please can you guide me which RAM should I buy?

I just can't seem to make sense of the markings on my current RAM. It reads - 4GB 2RX8 PC3-10600S-9-10-FP...wht does it all mean? Do the new 8GB RAMs that I should buy read exactly same?

Would be grateful if you could help me. Thanks in advance!

Your memory maxes at 8 gigs I am sorry to say. But you would not make gaming any better by installing 16 gigs, anyway. You will help video performance a tiny bit by making sure the memory is in dual channel mode which means you need 2 identical modules. So you need to toss the 2 gig you have in there and get a 4 gig module like the one you already have.

Gaming just needs an adequate amount of system memory and the upgrade to 8 gigs does make sense. The real workhorse in gaming is the video card and there is nothing you can do to yours to upgrade it. You have AMD switchable Radeon 5470 video which is getting pretty obsolete but is by no means a terrible laptop video system.

Ouch! Thanks Huffer. What will happen if I install a 8GB module instead of the 2GB. I.e. 8 + 4?

No boot of if it boots it will be unstable.
