My lodge's HP laptop (17-bs051od) - the hard drive has died. Got the dreaded 3F0 Boot device not found. Tech says can't get the disk to spin - thinks it looks to be the controller,. The disk itself MAY be ok. I need to know exactly what model hard drive is in this thing. So I can find another just like it (used is fine) to swap controllers - hoping to be able to recover the files. Because (of course) we don't have a backup.
Anybody know which drive I need to look for?

Hi:
The disk controller is not on the drive itself. it is an integral part of the motherboard.
So, if the controller has failed, the motherboard would have to be replaced, not the hard drive.
If you need to recover files, you can remove the drive, buy a SATA to USB adapter, and you should be able to plug it into a working PC and read/copy the files you need from the hard drive to the PC.
Something like this...
It could also be the drive is so dead, that it isn't recognized in the PC.
You may want to remove the drive and if the SATA to USB adapter doesn't power it up, then it is possible the notebook is fine and you just need to replace the hard drive.
Any 2.5" x 7.0 mm hard drive will do. You may want to even opt for a 2.5" solid state drive.
Below is the link to the service manual.

According to chapter 1 of the service manual, the notebook may have a M.2 slot that supports a SATA M2 SSD.
So if the hard drive controller on the motherboard is bad, you may be able to use a M.2 SATA SSD instead.
