Is it possible to replace Intel Optane 16GB / 256GB with Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe?

You're very welcome.

That is an easy problem to fix...That happens because your notebook has an Intel 11th gen core processor and W10 does not have the storage controller driver it needs to find the hard drive.

See the info at the link below.

Here is the link to the driver you need...

This package contains the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology is designed to provide functionality for the Intel Storage Controllers. The driver improves Serial ATA (SATA) disk performance with Native Command Queuing.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp111501-112000/sp111776.exe

There is an error in that document, and that is where HP tells you to right click on the Intel driver file and select Extract to

When I ran through the steps, I don't get an Extract to option when I right click on the file.

You will probably have the same issue.  Download and install the free 7-zip file utility from the link below.

The 1st file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

7-Zip (7-zip.org)

Then you can right click on the exe file, select 7-Zip from the menu, and select Extract to:  and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp111776), and copy that folder to your USB flash drive, and continue with the instructions.

Hi:

Yes, you should be able to but before removing the Intel Optane memory, you need to follow a certain procedure.

See the last two sections at the link below for how to properly disable the Intel Optane memory before removing it.

Hi Paul.

Thank you for reply.

The problem is that Windows 10 can't start. When I turn on the laptop, messages appear:

The operating system did not shutdown cleanly.
Reconstructing Cache Metadata.
Please do not interrupt this process.
Reading Packed Metadata into memory...Done
Processing Delta Log record...........26380
Failed to read delta log
Press <ESC> to continue.

I guess Intel Optane NVMe is broken. That's why I wanted to test whether the Samsung 970 would work.

You're very welcome.

Normally you would get a 24 character Long or Short DST failure code if the optane memory failed.

If you don't have any important files you need to save, see if you can clean install W10 by making bootable installation media with the media creation tool.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

If you can get W10 up and running again, you can read the info on the link for how to enable the Intel Optane memory and then if you want to replace the Optane memory with a SSD, you can properly disable and remove it.

Hi Paul.

When I select "disable Optane volume" in the BIOS, I get the message: "Warning: disabling may take from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Please don't restart your computer until the operation is complete." How do I know if the operation is over?

Hi:

Unfortunately, that I wouldn't know.

I wouldn't think it should take more than a few minutes.

See my reply above yours about reinstalling W10 in case you missed it.

Thank you for the answers.

When I started installing (USB flash) Windows 10 did not find any disk. Inside is a 1 TB HDD and Intel Optane. Completely crazy situation.

Thank you Paul.

I'll continue tomorrow. It is late now. I'm from Europe.

Anytime.

Yes, when you become a HP 'Expert' and someone lists the country they are from, you can see it.

It is just past 23:00 in your country and it is just past 17:00 here.

So yes, get a fresh start in the morning and when I wake up, hopefully your notebook will be running good as new.
